What Is Academic Bowl?

Academic Bowl is a fast-paced academic competition in which students work individually and as a team to answer questions.

It is an opportunity to build knowledge, confidence, and teamwork while representing JCBMS.

Competition Areas

The competition includes questions in:

• Mathematics
• Science
• Social Studies
• Language Arts
• Art/Classical Arts
• Toss-Up and Bonus Questions
• Tie-Breaker Questions

Each match includes two Lightning Rounds and a Toss-Up/Bonus Round.

Students compete using a buzzer system.

During Lightning Rounds, students answer individually without consulting teammates.

During Toss-Up/Bonus Rounds, team members may consult one another during designated Bonus questions.

Team Selection

• Eight students will be invited to join the team based on the top eight tryout scores.
• Five players compete in a match, so not every team member will play in every round or every meet.
• Selection is based on tryout performance and the ability to meet participation expectations.
• Selected students will receive an email with next steps.

Practices

When: Tuesdays and Thursdays
Time: 3:15–4:15 PM

Practice Activities

Practices will include:

• Academic content review
• Practice questions
• Buzzer technique
• Speed and accuracy
• Team strategies
• Toss-Up/Bonus practice
• Competing under time pressure

Important transportation requirement: Students must have a plan for transportation home after practice.

Parents/guardians are responsible for picking students up by 4:15 PM on practice days.

Participant Fee

Participant Fee: $25

The fee covers:

• Team T-shirts
• Supplies

2026–2027 Competition Schedule

All meets have a 5:00 PM arrival time and a 5:30 PM competition start time.

If your student is unable to attend a meet, please notify the sponsor as soon as possible to help with scheduling.

Parent/Guardian Support

Academic Bowl is a team effort. Parent and guardian support makes a difference.

Transportation

Parents/guardians can:

• Drive students to and from meets.
• Help with carpools.
• Follow all district transportation requirements.

Meals and Snacks

Parents/guardians can:

• Provide meals or snacks.
• Help organize or coordinate food.

Meet Volunteers

Parents/guardians can volunteer as:

• Reader
• Timer/Scorekeeper
• Logistics assistant
• Meal/snack distribution support
